Improved Wireless Doorbell Kit - Two Push Buttons (AVANTEK)
I love my new wireless doorbells! A really
practical solution if, like me, you keep missing deliveries and
visitors because your house was never wired for a doorbell. This kit
consists of two bell pushes and one plug-in receiver. Also included
are the two 12V 34A batteries required for the doorbell units, as
well as mounting options: super-strong 3M double-sided foam, and
correctly-sized screws with wall plugs. The instructions manual is
in English, French and German and I found it clear and comprehensive,
although the lettering is fashionably tiny.

Installation is really easy. After fitting the
batteries, all I had to do was decide where to position the doorbells
and find an available outlet to plug in the receiver. Then the most
important decision: which of the 52 chimes would stand the test of
time? Although even that is easy to fix, should you tire of your
current selection, as programming a new chime is fast and simple (you
may want to do this step before installing the doorbells, at least
the first time).
According to the maker, the signal will travel up to 300 metres of clear, unobstructed space, so the kit is ideal for an entry gate some distance from the house. In my case, the push buttons are outside the house, but even with thick walls in the way, both doorbells work perfectly. The jingles are a bit sharp but they do the job of alerting me to visitors. There are so many choices and styles that you are bound to find some you like. Because of the tiny size of the bell pushes, they could also be used as portable call buttons, within a very useful range.

- Push the top (Volume) button on the side of the receiver for 5 seconds until the blue LED starts flashing.
- Navigate through the various melodies using the lower button (Music Selection) until you hear one you like.
- Confirm this selection by activating the doorbell (transmitter) to replay the chime.
- Press
the Volume button again for 5 seconds to exit the programming mode.

Portable Wireless Doorbell Kit - One Bell Push (AVANTEK)
Absolutely brilliant! Our mailbox sits at the far
end of our driveway, strategically situated to allow roadside access
to delivery personnel. It's only 40 metres to our door, but
apparently too great a distance for the average courier or delivery
person to negotiate in their busy day.
We always listen for the sound of a delivery van but it seems that it's much easier for them to shove a scribbled no-one-at-home card in the mail slot than to toot the horn and wait half a minute for someone to show up. I was sick of missing deliveries when there is always someone home available to sign for them, so I jumped at the offer to try out and review this wireless doorbell. |
Inexpensive as it is, it's something I would not
have thought to buy because it looks so much like a toy. Well, the
good news is, it works! And it's so easy to install.
After removing the protective strip and re-seating the 12V battery (included), it took a couple of minutes to decide on the best place to mount the push-button transmitter unit (I chose to use the heavy-duty, double-sided sticky foam, but there are also two appropriately-sized screws and wall plugs in the package). Another minute to select a centrally-located wall outlet to plug in the receiver/chimes unit, and an additional minute or so to find my favourite among the 48 choices of chime melodies or more conventional ding-dong type sounds. I use the loudest of the four volume levels so it can be heard throughout our small house but you can set the volume lower and plug the receiver wherever you happen to be (in that sense it is portable). |
When activated, the chime
sounds and a blue LED light flashes, giving a visual indication as
well. To
be picky, there are two very minor points: 1) if you go past your
chosen chime melody, you have to cycle through all the others; and 2)
it would have been useful to have a label or slot to add your name.
To complete the initial test, my husband walked the contentious distance to the mailbox and pushed the newly-installed button. A rather sharp and staccato rendition of "For Elise" sounded in our kitchen (you can hear a sample of chime melodies in the video I made). We are delighted with this doorbell and with no longer having to keep the music volume low during delivery times. Another day, I plugged the receiver into our workshop, a free-standing building a good 80 metres from the transmitter, and the doorbell worked perfectly, despite some obstacles in the way and even a stone wall.
The very next day after installation, the doorbell rang and, having jogged to the mailbox, I smugly received a large box, which would normally have been taken back to the post office. Our postie, unable to ignore the black, bold notice, “DOORBELL”, just below the mail slot, looked less enthusiastic than me but managed to have the last word, saying that “things had been very difficult BEFORE the doorbell”.
